DALLAS – Locking horns with his brother, The Undertaker, inside the chaotic confines of Hell in a Cell, World Heavyweight
In a pre-match interview with Josh Mathews, the returning “Father of Destruction” explained that he’s been spending the past six years biding his time and “waiting for the time” to make his presence felt. Indeed, Bearer made an impact at Hell in a Cell – but not in the way The Undertaker had anticipated.
In this epic encounter, which shook the very foundation of Dallas’ American Airlines Center, Kane seemed to gain the upper hand when he successfully reversed The Undertaker’s Tombstone Piledriver into a vicious Tombstone of his own. However, scoring only a two-count, The Big Red Monster went into a rage, knocking out the referee and prompting
Kane’s victory inside the Devil’s Playground brings his storied rivalry with his brother full-circle. It was during the very first Hell in a Cell Match at Bad Blood 1997 when Kane – brought into WWE by his father – tore the door off the two-ton steel structure to deliver a history-changing Tombstone to his half-brother. At Hell in a Cell, 13 years later, “The Father of Destruction” and “The Devil’s Favorite Demon” joined forces once again, uniting under a common goal: To decimate The Deadman.
This latest chapter in the saga of The Brothers of Destruction began on Memorial Day weekend, when Kane brutally assaulted The Undertaker and left him in a “vegetative state.” Not content with living in his brother’s shadow, Kane claimed the attack was part of a long-gestating plot to bring about The Phenom’s demise.
Capturing the World Heavyweight Title at Money in the Bank, Kane later affirmed that he was now in possession of his brother’s otherworldly powers – a claim put to the test at SummerSlam when The Phenom resurfaced to challenge his calculating sibling. However, The Undertaker was hardly at 100 percent, and was Tombstoned into oblivion on that scorching August night.
Weeks later, Kane and The Undertaker collided for the World Heavyweight Title at Night of Champions in a No Holds Barred Match. In that harrowing battle, The Big Red Machine would prove the more ruthless Brother of Destruction, dominating The Deadman and once again driving him into the canvas with a devastating Tombstone.
It seemed as though not even The Undertaker could end Kane’s reign of terror, but the winds of change blew coldly on the Sept. 24 edition of SmackDown, when a returning Paul Bearer emerged from a casket, holding The Phenom’s legendary urn aloft. The urn – long believed to be the source of The Undertaker’s power – enlivened the weakened seven-time World Champion. At that instant, Kane was stricken with fear: It seemed his quest to destroy his brother would come to an abrupt and unsuccessful end at Hell in a Cell.
However, Bearer had a quest all his own, making his motivations clear when his treachery secured a tainted victory for "The Devil's Favorite Demon."
Why did “The Father of Destruction” betray The Undertaker? What lies ahead for The Brothers of Destruction? Find out this Friday night on SmackDown at 8/7 CT on Syfy.
MATCH:Wade Barrett def. John Cena (Cena now a member of The Nexus)
DALLAS – At
John Cena failed.
With the fate of all of WWE resting on his shoulders, the Legendary star fell to Barrett in a controversial bout and is now a member of The Nexus.
In a match where so much was at stake, it is hard to comprehend this shocking outcome. If the wildly popular Superstar would have won, Barrett and his Nexus cronies would have disbanded. But if the Nexus leader got the win, Cena would have no choice but to join the controversial band of rebels.
John Cena as a member of The Nexus? It was an unthinkable nightmare that couldn’t possibly come true and Cena brought the fight to Barrett to make sure this would not happen. Focused and intense, the multiple-time World Champion controlled his young opponent and looked to be on his way to victory. Even the presence of the other Nexus members couldn’t save Barrett as an army of WWE Superstars including Big Show, Kofi Kingston and MVP arrived to chase the intruders away.
With the ringside cleared and Barrett dazed, Cena was only an STF away from the win. That’s when two mystery assailants stormed the ring — one distracting the referee while the other blasted Cena in the head with a foreign object, knocking him out cold and giving Barrett the win in the biggest match of his career.
After The Nexus celebrated their huge victory, a broken and bruised Cena staggered away from the ring while thousands of saddened WWE fans looked on in shock and disappointment. Their chants of "Cena! Cena!" were now replaced by a silence that was almost eerie.
How will the WWE Universe react when Cena arrives at Raw on Monday night draped in the trademark black and gold of The Nexus? WWE may never be the same again.
MATCH:WWE Champion Randy Orton def. Sheamus (Hell in a Cell Match)
DALLAS — Demonstrating the traits of a true Apex Predator at
Randy Orton is already a dangerous competitor. Simply ask the often long-winded Chris Jericho … though you’ll have to wait for him to recover from the WWE Champion’s debilitating punt one week ago. Allow The Viper to coil inside Hell itself and you’re looking at a 10th circle of the fiery Inferno.
Pairing more traditional methods of attack with steel-reinforced brutality, the two WWE Title minded men unleashed their most vile assaults against one another to date. The WWE Champion’s inner mechanisms for survival and evolution (not unlike Orton’s years-past affiliation with Triple H, Ric Flair and Batista) seemed to only compel him to amplify the pain he inflicted upon his Irish-born challenger.
By contrast, in his first-ever Hell in a Cell Match, Sheamus appeared hideously comfortable within its four sides, which even those he used as a weapon against Orton.
Steel chairs, steel stairs, steel walls. Plus, two Brogue kicks. The Celtic Warrior fought unrelentingly for the chance to once more seize the golden prize. But the lightning fast strike of the serpentine Superstar – an RKO atop the ring steps – was all it took to excise the challenge before him.
Possessing the experience of two previous Hell in a Cell clashes, Orton carried what ultimately proved to be a critical advantage in Dallas’ American Airlines Center. Concluding a hellacious joust, WWE’s Apex Predator emerged from the Devil’s Playground in victory over Sheamus – a “structured” settlement of their past title encounters, which each ended inconclusively.
Now, the WWE Title-bearing serpent slithers forth from the confines of Hell toward his own form of heavenly bliss: A wealth of future challengers, who, to a creature built for predation, are nothing more than his next prey.
MATCH:Daniel Bryan won U.S. Championship Triple Threat Submissions Count Anywhere Match
DALLAS – Only two weeks after defeating The Miz for the United States Championship at Night of Going into tonight’s match, it was clear that Daniel Bryan would be looking to apply this brutal hold to whomever he could get his hands on. After all, it was the LeBell Lock that the Raw Superstar used to capture the U.S. Title at Night of Champions. But the unique stipulations of this bout made getting a submission victory a lot easier said than done. With no disqualifications in this match, Daniel Bryan knew he’d have to keep an eye out for The Miz’s personal apprentice, Alex Riley – a man who would do anything to earn Mr. Money in the Bank’s approval. And in the case of Morrison, the United States Champion had to contend with an unpredictable Superstar trained in parkour, an amazing athletic skill that allows The Monday Night Delight to turn any part of the arena into his personal playground. For a Superstar so young in his career, the bout was a true challenge, but Daniel Bryan was up to the task. With the action flying fast and furious from the very beginning, all three competitors tried to keep pace as the fight went from the ring to the floor to the bleachers of the American Airlines Center. But things truly heated up when Morrison scaled the massive set on the entrance ramp and launched himself onto Miz and Daniel Bryan. The breathtaking risk may have helped The Guru of Greatness get the victory, but intereference from Alex Riley stopped that from happening. Instead, it would be the dispatching of Riley by Daniel Bryan and a LeBell Lock on The Miz that would give the United States Champion the win.
MATCH:Natalya def. Unified Divas Champion Michelle McCool by Disqualification
DALLAS – Self-professed “co-Unified Divas Champions” Lay-Cool dodged a major disaster inside the American Airlines Center when Layla intentionally got Michelle McCool disqualified in order to retain the title. At the end of a hard-fought contest, though Lay-Cool left Hell in a Cell with the title, they learned Natalya is a true threat to their “Flawless” championship reign.
It was a desperate move by Layla to save her co-champion, and give Natalya the win, but it was also a smart decision ensuring that the Unified Divas Championship would remain in their possession. Lay-Cool has managed to defeat and outsmart nearly all of the Divas of SmackDown and Raw, but based on the events of Hell in a Cell, it appears they may have met their match in a member of the legendary Hart family.
The Women’s Championship and the Divas Championship were unified at Night of
Just one week later, Natalya outlasted Raw’s top femme fatales, including several former Divas Champions, in a Battle Royal to earn No.1 contendership and an opportunity at the new Unified Divas Championship.
For Natalya and Michelle, this clash over the Divas Title has brought them full circle. At The Great American Bash in 2008, Michelle defeated Natalya to become the first-ever Divas Champion. But it has been two years since these sexy, smart and powerful women battled for a title, and Natalya has since become a much fiercer competitor than ever before.
The third-generation Diva’s resolve and desire to win the title were put to the ultimate test at Hell in a Cell. Two years after first colliding with Michelle, this time it was Natalya who gained the upper hand and managed to capture her opponent in the Hart family’s patented Sharpshooter.
Mere moments before Michelle could tap out, Layla came to her best friend’s rescue and got her partner intentionally disqualified by throwing her shoe at Natalya in order to salvage the title. Before Layla could escape the ring, Natalya also briefly trapped her in a Sharpshooter after the match.
Layla's brash decision proved not only that Lay-Cool undoubtedly has each other’s backs, but also that Natalya may be their greatest foil to date.
MATCH:Edge def. Jack Swagger
DALLAS – At Hell in a Cell, Edge continued his one-Superstar battle against “stupidity,” humiliating Alberto Del Rio and defeating former World Heavyweight
Del Rio arrived at his first pay-per-view in style, cruising into the American Airlines Center in a shiny, new Rolls Royce. The smiling Superstar wasted no time bragging to the
It wasn’t long before Edge had heard enough from the aristocratic Superstar. Just two days after returning to SmackDown and Spearing Swagger’s personal mascot, “The Swagger Soaring Eagle,” The Ultimate Opportunist interrupted Del Rio’s enthusiastic tribute to himself in order to take another stand against something he considered “stupid.”
Still angry over Edge’s actions on Friday night, Swagger joined the fray and things quickly turned volatile.
Before the dust could clear, Monday Night Raw’s anonymous General Manager intervened. Via an e-mail read by announcer Michael Cole, the unknown Monday night authority informed Edge that he will make a live, in-ring apology to him on Raw. He then declared that The Rated-R Superstar would face “The All-American American” immediately in an impromptu match.
Despite an intense effort by Swagger – who tried desperately to overcome his opponent with his infamous ankle lock – the nine-time World Champion roared back, blasting the two-time All-American’s hopes for victory with an earth-shattering Spear.
Will Edge apologize to the reigning authority of Raw in the wake of his pay-per-view triumph? Or will he consider the very idea of it “stupid”? Find out on Monday Night Raw at 9/8 CT on USA Network.
THANKS TO WWE
